The Regions

When you picture a destination wedding in Italy, there are probably a few places that immediately come to mind. A villa overlooking Lake Como, a Tuscan vineyard at sunset, or a historic palazzo on the Amalfi Coast, and for good reason, Italy’s most famous wedding destinations are beautiful, romantic and unforgettable.

But Italy is so much bigger than the places that are all over your Pinterest and Instagram feeds. From vineyard-covered hills in the north to historic towns in the south, there are destinations across the country that offer incredible scenery, food, culture and atmosphere, sometimes without the same level of crowds and familiarity. For couples planning a destination wedding, looking beyond the obvious can also mean finding somewhere that feels much more personal. So, if you’re dreaming of an Italian wedding but want something a little different, here are six destinations worth putting on your list.

Piedmont: For the Couple Who Loves Wine, Food and the Countryside

Let’s start in the north, Piedmont is one of Italy’s most beautiful, and still relatively under-the-radar wedding destinations. Located at the foot of the Alps, the region is home to the Langhe and Roero, where rolling vineyards stretch across hills dotted with medieval villages and castles. This is the Italy of long lunches, Barolo and Barbaresco, truffles, elegant historic venues and sunsets over the vineyards. It is particularly beautiful for couples who want a wedding weekend rather than simply a wedding day. Imagine welcoming your guests with an aperitivo overlooking the vines, spending the next day exploring local wineries and villages, and ending the weekend with a relaxed celebration surrounded by family and friends.

Piedmont also has a very different atmosphere from the more recognizable Italian wedding destinations. It feels sophisticated without being overly formal, romantic without feeling cliché, and deeply connected to the local culture. And for couples who love food and wine, it is difficult to beat.

I must say, I may be a bit biased to Piedmont, it's where I was born, raised and moved back to after living abroad. But you cannot deny the beauty of the region- it will always be one of my favorite destinations to plan trips to!

Lake Garda: The Italian Lake You May Not Have Considered

Ok… maybe this isn't a region, but the lake sits between three regions and I had to include it. Lake Como gets most of the attention, but it isn’t the only Italian lake capable of creating an incredible wedding backdrop. Lake Garda offers dramatic mountains, blue water, elegant villas, historic towns and beautiful lakeside hotels, with a little more space to explore.

The lake is also particularly interesting from a logistics perspective for destination weddings, with access from several airports and easy connections to cities including Verona and Milan. For couples bringing a larger group of guests to Italy, accessibility can make a huge difference.

And there is plenty to do beyond the wedding itself: boat trips, wine tasting, spa days, historic villages and even a day trip to Verona. Your guests don’t simply have to attend your wedding, they can experience Italy with you.

Umbria: Tuscany's Quieter Neighbor

If your dream wedding involves rolling green hills, medieval villages, olive groves and long tables under the stars, you don’t necessarily have to choose Tuscany, Umbria is just next door.

Often described as Tuscany’s quieter neighbor, the region offers many of the landscapes people associate with an Italian countryside wedding, but with a distinctly different atmosphere. Think stone villages, historic castles, country estates and countryside surrounded by olive trees and vineyards. Umbria is particularly suited to couples who want their wedding to feel intimate and relaxed.

Rather than spending the weekend rushing from one famous sight to another, you can settle into the countryside and actually enjoy being there, and isn’t that exactly what a destination wedding should be about?

Sicily: For Something Dramatic, Colorful and Unforgettable

Sicily offers a completely different version of Italy- Ancient architecture, Baroque towns, dramatic coastlines, volcanic landscapes, beautiful beaches and some of the country’s most distinctive food all come together on one island.

For couples who want their wedding to have a strong sense of place, Sicily has plenty to offer. You could celebrate in a historic palazzo, a countryside estate, a seaside property or surrounded by vineyards with Mount Etna in the distance.

Sicily is also becoming increasingly prominent in the destination wedding world, particularly for couples looking beyond the traditional Tuscany–Amalfi–Lake Como circuit. The history of Sicily gives it one huge advantage- it doesn't feel like anywhere else… It's unmistakably Sicilian

Marche: Italy's Understated Beauty

For couples who really want to discover somewhere less expected, consider Marche. Stretching from the Apennine Mountains to the Adriatic Sea, the region combines countryside, beaches, historic towns and beautiful architecture.

It doesn’t have the same international wedding reputation as Tuscany or the Amalfi Coast and that can be part of its appeal. Here, you can find hilltop villages, historic residences, vineyards and countryside landscapes while still being relatively close to the coast. It is a wonderful option for couples who want their guests to experience an Italy that feels authentic and less familiar. The kind of place where your wedding becomes part of a trip that your guests might never otherwise have taken!

Puglia: Look Beyond the Postcard

I'll be honest, Puglia is no longer exactly a secret. The whitewashed towns, ancient olive trees and beautiful masserie have become some of the most recognisable images of Italian destination weddings. But there is much more to Puglia than the classic wedding aesthetic.

From the Baroque architecture of Lecce to the coastline of Salento and the quieter corners of the region, there are plenty of ways to create a Puglian wedding that doesn’t feel like every other celebration you’ve seen online. The region is particularly well suited to the growing trend of the wedding week, giving couples and their guests several days to enjoy the destination together rather than treating the wedding as a single event.

That is something we’re seeing more of across the Italian destination wedding market: smaller celebrations, longer stays and experiences built around the people and the place. In Short: Your Wedding Can be Distinctly Yours

No matter where you end up in Italy, the goal is for your day to be yours, not the same as the couple you saw on Instagram. There's nothing wrong with choosing Lake Como, Tuscany or the Amalfi Coast, they're obviously famous for a reason. However, when you're planning a destination wedding, one of the most exciting parts of the process is discovering that Italy offers so many different versions of itself to build your perfect romance.

Maybe for you that's a vineyard in Piedmont, a villa on Lake Garda, a medieval village in Umbria, a seaside celebration in Sicily, or maybe it's somewhere you've never heard before. The perfect destination isn't necessarily the one you've seen or heard of the most, it's the one that feels like you. Sometimes, finding that place means looking a little further off the beaten path.
