Weddings & Celebrations

The ceremony, the reception, the dinner, the dancing, and then, all too quickly, it's all over. But destination weddings have changed the way couples think about celebrating. When you’re asking your closest friends and family to travel across the world to celebrate with you, one day can suddenly feel like it isn’t enough. That’s where the Italian wedding weekend, or even wedding week, comes in.

Instead of simply bringing your guests to Italy for the wedding, couples are increasingly creating an entire experience around it, and Italy happens to be the perfect place to do it.

What exactly is a wedding weekend?

A wedding weekend doesn’t have to mean organizing a packed schedule from morning until night. In fact, the opposite can be more enjoyable. The idea is to give your guests a few opportunities to spend time together throughout the trip, while still leaving plenty of room for everyone to relax and explore independently.

A typical Italian wedding weekend might look something like this:

Thursday  - Arrival

Guests arrive in Italy and check into their hotels.

That evening, everyone comes together for a relaxed welcome dinner, perhaps at a local trattoria, a vineyard or a restaurant overlooking the sea. No formalities. Just good food, wine and the excitement of finally being together- in Italy nonetheless!

Friday - Explore Italy

This is where you can really make the destination part of the celebration.

Depending on where you’re staying, your guests might enjoy a wine tasting, a cooking class, a boat trip, a guided city tour or simply a free day to explore. Some couples organize one group activity, while others give guests recommendations and let them choose their own adventure.

Saturday - The Wedding

The main event.

After spending the previous days together, guests already feel connected to the destination and to each other and the wedding becomes the centerpiece of a much bigger experience.

Sunday - One Last Italian Lunch

Before everyone heads home, gather for one final meal. A long Sunday lunch, an informal brunch, or an aperitivo- something relaxed. Because, somehow, the best conversations always seem to happen around an Italian table.

Why Italy works so well for a wedding weekend

One of the biggest advantages of a destination wedding in Italy is the sheer variety of experiences available within relatively small areas. You don’t have to choose between a beautiful wedding venue and an interesting destination. you can have both. Getting married in Piedmont could mean spending the weekend exploring vineyards and medieval villages. In Lake Garda, guests could take a boat across the lake or visit nearby Verona. In Puglia, you could combine a masseria wedding with beaches, historic towns and long dinners under the stars. In Sicily, your guests could explore ancient towns, beaches, wineries and dramatic landscapes- The destination becomes part of the celebration.

Your guests are part of the experience

There is another reason wedding weekends are becoming so appealing: your guests have travelled a long way for you. For many American couples getting married in Italy, their wedding may be one of the few occasions when their entire group of family and friends are together in one place, that makes the time surrounding the wedding incredibly valuable. Your guests aren’t simply “wedding guests”, they’re your parents, siblings, grandparents, college friends, childhood friends and the people who have been part of your lives for years and a wedding weekend gives you more time with them. More dinners, more conversations, more memories. And often, those moments outside the wedding itself become some of the ones you’ll remember most.

You don’t have to organize everything

One common misconception is that creating a wedding weekend means creating a three-day itinerary that you have to manage yourself. I'm here to tell you that it doesn’t. In fact, the best wedding weekends often leave plenty of flexibility. You might organize two or three key events and provide your guests with a selection of things they can do independently.

For example:

Friday afternoon

Choose between:

  • Wine tasting

  • Spa afternoon

  • Local sightseeing

  • Beach day

  • Cooking class

  • Free time

Then everyone comes together in the evening for dinner.

This gives guests the freedom to enjoy Italy in their own way without making the couple responsible for entertaining everyone every minute of the trip.

The logistics behind the magic

Of course, there is a less glamorous side to a wedding weekend. Someone has to organise the airport transfers, communicate hotel information, explain how guests can get from one town to another, and someone needs to make sure everyone knows where to be and when.

When you’re planning your wedding from another country, those details can quickly become overwhelming. This is where having someone manage the travel side of your wedding can make a huge difference.

From accommodation recommendations and hotel blocks to transfers, guest communication and local information, having a dedicated point of contact means you don’t have to become the travel agent for your own wedding.

Make it feel like a trip, not an itinerary

The most memorable wedding weekends aren’t necessarily the ones with the most activities, they’re the ones where everything feels natural. A long dinner that goes on for hours, a spontaneous swim, a group getting lost in a little Italian village, a bottle of wine opened back at the hotel. Your grandmother sitting outside in the sunshine with a coffee, friends meeting each other for the first time and becoming friends themselves. These are the moments you can’t put into a wedding schedule, and they’re exactly why a destination wedding can be so much more than a wedding.

Your wedding can be the beginning of the trip

If you’re considering getting married in Italy, don’t just ask yourself:

“Where should we get married?”

Ask:

“What do we want our guests to experience while they’re here?”

Because your wedding destination can become part of the story. The vineyard where you celebrated your first night together. The village where your guests had lunch. The lake where everyone took a boat ride. The little restaurant where your families finally met. The place where you spent an entire afternoon doing absolutely nothing. Years from now, you may not remember every detail of the seating plan, but you’ll remember the people you brought together, the places you discovered and the feeling of having everyone you love in one beautiful corner of Italy. And that’s the real magic of a destination wedding, it’s not just one day. It’s the beginning of a journey.
